Flubber or Gak- A Super Cool Creation for Kids

So there I was wasting time perusing Pinterest the other day when I see an activity for kids called Flubber. oooohhh yes, I know exactly what this is, just by a different name! Back in the day when I worked in a day care center we made this for the kiddos all the time, only, back then (before the Robin Williams movie) we called it Gak. I immediately headed for my old daycare bin and found all the ingredients necessary to make my own boys some Flubber (as the cool kids are calling it these days) of their own. I can’t believe I hadn’t done this before.

(the food colouring isn’t completely kneaded in here)

Flubber

What you’ll need:

Wire whisk
1 cup all purpose white glue (recommended: Elmer’s Regular)
3/4 cup water
Food coloring or 1 tablespoon tempera paint, your choice of color
Borax detergent
Mix together with wire whisk the all purpose glue, water, and food coloring/tempera paint.
Mix separately 1/3 c. water and 1/2 tsp. Borax. Slowly pour Borax mix into glue mix.
Let stand a few minutes, then knead. Pour off any remaining liquid.

Store the flubber in plastic ziploc style bags
Repeat again for different colors.

So as you can see Flubber is kind of a stretchy rubbery concoction. It appears wet because it is shiny but it’s not.  It can be used a little bit like playdough by molding and shaping it, but flubber doesn’t hold it’s form for too long. You can pull and stretch it to great lengths and watch as it kind of oozes over objects. Flubber or Gak is a great sensory activity and the kids will love it, you just might find yourself sitting with them longer than you expected to having a play yourself. It’s quite mesmerizing and a whole lot of fun.
