Garlic and Cheese Whole Wheat Biscuits

Did you know that March is designated as Nurtrition Month? Who knew? I wonder if it has anything to do with the prospect of nicer weather as we crawl out of our winter cocoons and realize that summer is just around the corner! Nothing screams “EAT BETTER!!” than realizing bathing suit season is only a couple of months away!

While many people I know try to cut back on eating the ooey gooey good stuff like cheese to lose weight, it’s actually really good for you and is a nutritious source of calcium, protein and vitamin B12 and more! Like all things, it’s best in moderation and be sure to select a natural product over processed foods. Gay Lea’s Ivanhoe Cheese is the oldest cheese company of it’s kind in Canada and has gained quite the reputation for producing high quality and award winning, aged cheddar cheese and specialty cheeses.

These Garlic and Cheese Whole Wheat Biscuits are a family favourite of ours to dip in soups and chili’s, my little boys gobble them up in a heart beat and I love knowing that I made them myself with the best ingredients.

Garlic and Cheese Whole Wheat Biscuits

Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp sea salt
1 cup grated Ivanhoe Old Sharpe Cheese
1/4 tsp garlic powder
3 Tbsp cold Gaylea unsalted butter
3/4 cup milk

Optional Buttery Topping

3 Tbsp melted butter
1/4 tsp dried parsley flakes
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Directions

Preheat oven to 425F

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sea salt and garlic powder.

Cut in butter butter until coarse crumbs are formed. Lightly toss in grated cheese, I usually just use my hands to toss the cheese and crumbs together.

Slowly pour in milk, mixing with a wooden spoon until just moist ( a few dry spots are okay, you don’t want to overmix or have dough too wet).

Using hands or a cookie scooper, drop biscuits onto a greased or lined baking sheet. (parchment paper is great and silicone baking mats work well too)

Bake for 12-14 min, until golden brown.

If you want to stick with the healthiest version, stop right here, the biscuits will still be great. If you can’t resist some butter on your biscuits, keep going!

While biscuits are in the oven, combine melted butter, parsley, and garlic powder in a small bowl.

When the biscuits come out of the oven, brush the butter mixture over the top of the biscuits. Serve warm.
