I remember the good old days when my boys were young and they spent hours playing outside. Whether it was digging in the sandbox or riding their trikes up and down the street, they never wanted to come inside and sometimes even cried when they needed to. Fast forward to today and the boys would much rather hide out in the basement with their favourite video games and cry when we force them outside, especially if the weather isn’t absolutely perfect. You just can’t win! lol
Something we learned right away is, you can’t just ‘send’ them outside, you need to go outside too and get active as a family. Not only does it set a good example but it’s great bonding time as well!
Here are a few tips on how to et your family back into the routine of playing outside and how to make the most of the sunny months ahead
Break out the outdoor toys
We store all of our seasonal toys in the garage, so when the warm weather hits it’s time to start bring them all back out again. It can be really exciting for the boys to see toys they had long forgotten about or couldn’t wait to play with again. We don’t pull everything out at once, I find it keeps them interested longer if something new comes out in stages.
Shed winter routines
It’s time to celebrate the extended hours of daylight!! After dinner when homework and chores are complete we love to take a family walk or bike ride together. These days though, we are spending 4 nights a week on the soccer field. It’s official, I’m a soccer mom!
Learn a new skill
Learning to ride a bike is a major milestone for any child! I love watching the transition from trike, to balance bike to training wheels and that big day when the training wheels come off! It’s so exciting to see them work toward their next goal and the pride they feel when they’ve acheived it!
