Robot Birthday Cake

Fun and easy Robot birthday cake!

Another day another birthday around here, yes, when it rains it pours birthday confetti!

My baby boy recently turned six, SIX people!!! gah!! What happened to my baby boy? I swore I told that kid he wasn’t allowed to grow any older than 4 and here is already 6 and still not listening! Birthdays are bittersweet aren’t they?

For this birthday boy I decided to make a Robot Cake, because it just screamed ‘little boy’ and I was sure he’d love it.

I had seen the idea pinned onto pinterest of course, but it went to a photo gallery. No worries, just a photo of the cake was easy enough to work with, it was actually very simple to assemble!

Robot Birthday Cake

You’ll Need

  • Box mix in any flavour you like or homemade recipe
  • Buttercream icing tinted any colour (I used orange)
  • Small donuts (Chocolate or powdered work well)
  • 2 Oreo cookies
  • m&m’s (2 brown for the eyes, red for the mouth, any colour combo for the rest)
  • Lollipop
  • 6 Mike and Ike style candy

Assembling the Robot Cake

Bake the cake according to directions on the box in a 9 x 13 pan. The feet are made with cupcakes. I had some extra cupcakes on hand, but you can also use muffins or put some of the cake mix into cupcake liners and the rest into the pan and bake both.

Once cooled, invert the pan and carefully remove the cake from the pan.

Using a knife with a serrated edge, cut the cake to shape. You’ll want a larger rectangle on the bottom and a smaller one on top for the head. Arrange the pieces on a cake board.

Cover both cake pieces evenly with buttercream icing. I was planning on making a traditional grey robot, but I could only fine white donuts and with the tin foil on the board behind the cake, I decided that the robot needed a punch of colour and opted for a bright orange.

Unwrap the lollipop and place the stick into the top of the head.

For the eyes, separate the Oreo cookies. You can secure the brown m&m’s with a dab of white icing or here’s a little trick. My cookies left the white inside icing a little dirty, so I took a knife and scrapped a thin layer off of the oreo icing. Then I just rolled that into a ball and used it to secure the pupil. Worked like a charm.

I used 8 red m&m’s to make a smiling mouth.

For the feet, add the Mike and Ike candies to the side of the cupcakes like laces. You could also use the m&m’s turned on their side for this instead.

The belly is the control panel, start by creating your child’s new age like you would see it digitally. You might want to plan the pattern out before putting them on the cake.

I used hard black candy that tasted like black licorice so it would stand out well against the colour. Gumballs are about the same size and would work well, or just go ahead and use m&m’s for the whole thing. Once you have the basic shape of the number, fill in the rest to create a square.

For legs and arms, use a dab of icing to the bottom of a donut so they stay upright and just stick them in a row.

Place the feet at the bottom of the legs, and cut one donut in half to create hands. For the neck just slip a donut between the head and body.

So there you go, you got yourself a Birthday Robot!
