Minion Cake

With the new Minion movie coming out this summer, I decided I would make a fun little minion cake for my boy turning 7 this year. Oh, and his dad too, because this kid was born right on his dad’s birthday! The good thing is, Minions are so lovable they have fans big and small, and it was the perfect character to make for a multi generational cake! Who can resist those adorable minions?!

Betty Crocker has a great step by step tutorial, so I followed along with that, adding our own twist in spots.

Minion Cake - Mom vs the Boys

Minion Cake

You’ll Need

Box cake mix
Buttercream Icing
Wilton Lemon Yellow Food Colouring
Wilton Blue Food Colouring
Wilton Black Food Colouring
Black string licorice
2 Hershey kisses, wrapper removed
3 Tootsie Rolls
1-2 Tbsp Honey

Large chocolate disk
Small chocolate disk
Blue candy melt (optional)
White or silver sugar

Directions

Bake the box cake mix according to the package in a 9×13 pan. Allow to cool completely. Trim away the square edge of the cake to create an oblong shape for your minion. Trim the bottom flat.

Mix your Lemon Yellow food colouring with the buttercream icing. This is a perfect minion colour, they should rename it ‘Minion Yellow’! Do a thin crumb coat on the coat, this can be a messy layer and will get the loose crumbs. Then place in the freeze for about 30 min to firm up.

Repeat another layer with the yellow icing only going down about 3/4 of the way, using a spatula to make the icing as smooth and flat as possible. Use the spatula to make an upward curving line in the icing about 4 inches from the bottom of the cake. This line will separate the yellow body from the blue pants. Mix the blue buttercream and spread blue on the remaining portion.

Use licorice lace to cover the line made by the spatula. Use more licorice laces to outline the bottom edges of the cake and to outline the minion’s jumper. Hopefully your lace won’t have kinks in it! I had one in an unfortunate spot, right in the middle of the jumper.

To finish the jumper insert two hershey kisses, upside down, into each side.

For the minion’s eye, frost the large chocolate disk with a thick layer of white buttercream icing. I found my eye pieces at the bulk barn. When I saw the blue candy melts I thought it  would be fun to give the minion a blue eye. If you want to go this route, just stack the small chocolate disk onto the blue one.

For the goggles, take about 3-5 tootsie rolls and knead until soft. You can also put them in the microwave, unwrapped, for a few seconds to softened them up. I found this worked really well. Roll the candy between your palms into a rope. Press the rope around a plastic tumbler with a rim that just fits around your eye piece. Press the loose ends together to secure.

Gently pull the candy off of the  tumbler, being careful to keep the shape.  Coat the chocolate candy ring with a little honey using a pastry brush—you may not use all of the honey. Place the white or silver sugar in a dish and dip the chocolate ring into the sugar.

To assemble, place the finished eye piece onto the cake towards the top, middle. Place the tootsie roll ring around it. Draw two lines of icing about two inches apart on either side of the silver eye piece using black buttercream. Fill in the lines with more icing and then smooth it with a small knife or spatula. I used an icing tip that created a flat line and make strips, until covered.

Use more black licorice lace for the mouth and hair, and your adorable minion cake is complete!!
