Philips AVENT newborn bottles

Welcome Lisa to the blog today, as she shares her thoughts on some of the latest Philips Avent products

Baby #2 was born on my front entrance floor. 3 weeks early. A screaming bundle that weighed only 5lbs 12oz – the smallest baby that I had ever personally held or seen. He was so tiny. 2 days after he arrived, he went grey. Thankfully, our midwife was here at the time and we ended up rushing to the hospital, where we stayed in the NICU for 2 weeks as he adapted to breathing better.

Those weeks in the NICU were some of the most emotionally draining of my life. Despite the fact I wasn’t able to hold him while he was tucked away carefully in his little incubator, I was stubbornly determined to have him breastfed and spent a bunch of time hidden in a small room with an eletric grade pump filling the little bottles they gave me. (I probably produced enough to feed the whole ward!)

Tummies like those of the preemies in the NICU and newborns are tiny. They don’t need a huge amount of milk before they are full. So the bottles they use to feed these wee ones are ridiculously small and cute.

Bringing him home, we found that normal baby bottles were huge in comparison, but did you know that you can get small ones from Philips AVENT too?

The bottles from AVENT have always been our favourite and the ones that our babies were most likely to use. I love that BPA free, making them safe, and that they are clear so you can see inside and measure how much your baby has eaten. The nipples are designed with the intention of being very similar to a breast – wide and soft with a controlled, careful flow. This means that changing from breast to bottle is more smooth and natural.

The smallest bottle is only 2 oz big. The nipple included is a “first flow” nipple, which only allows very slow flow so that baby doesn’t choke from a sudden gush of milk. As baby grows, you can get different nipples to increase the rate of milk flow to meet their growing feeding needs.

Same with the bottles, too. Avent offers a great selection of bottle sizes – from this teeny newborn size to a medium bottle with 4 oz to a large one that’s 9 oz. It’s great that you can use the same style of bottle for your baby all the way along, especially if you are combining breastfeeding with bottles, because it’s going to be easier to switch back and forth with consistency.

Philips AVENT offers a lot of other products that are handy and special for new moms and their little babies. Our family has been a huge fan of their soothers, and you have to check out their Penguin sippy cups are! I mean, really – come ON! How cute are they?!
