If my Dyson had a baby…the Dyson Small Ball

Dyson is proud to introduce their newest bundle of joy, weighing just 5.5 kg, the Dyson Small Ball. That’s right, it’s like the big bad full sized Dyson’s had a baby and she’s got all their awesome Dyson genes but comes in half the size.

The Dyson Small Ball

Dyson Small Ball

I’ve been a Dyson fan for years now and have used a couple different models so I was really intrigued by the Small Ball. When the vacuum arrived, the box was small and manageable and it was very easy to set the machine up, it only took a second to snap it in place. At first glance it was easy to see that the new vacuum looked exactly like other Dyson’s but on a smaller scale. The ball is much smaller and the dirt bin is about half the size of a regular Dyson.

Here’s a side by side comparison to my Dyson DC77

Dyson DC77 and Dyson Small Ball

The retractable wand on the Small Ball, gives 50% more space when storing, as it shrinks down quite small. This is perfect for homes with little storage space, especially apartments.  The Dyson Small Ball is small, but that doesn’t mean that it’s any less powerful than a standard Dyson. It’s still a beast when it comes to sucking up dirt and dust! There are two tiers of cyclones that capture particles as small as pollen, mould and bacteria.

Taking the Dyson Small Ball for a spin the first time was exciting, for reals, it was actually a lot of fun to use this little one! First off, it’s just so light you can really motor around with it. I’ve always felt like my mom could benefit from having a Dyson, her house has a lot of carpet and a hairy dog, but truth is the full sized Dyson’s can be a little heavy to lug around. This is not the case with the Small Ball, it weighs just 5.5 kg and is a breeze to maneuver and of course with the ball technology you can turn on a dime around any obstacle. The light weight also makes going up and down stairs less of a chore.

The Dyson Small Ball is a multi-floor machine. We have a mix of carpet and laminate flooring in our house and I can work my way through the house without skipping a beat.  The active base plate automatically adjusts the cleaner head height to seal in suction across carpets and hard floors. Carbon filaments pick up fine dust that sticks to hard floor surfaces.

The Small Ball still has a fairly good reach on the hose and the cord, and comes with space for two on board attachments. This purple model is the Animal, so it comes with 4 extra attachments including a Tangle-free Turbine Tool, Articulating hard floor tool, Stiff bristle brush and a Grooming tool for your pet. Our dog Oakley is still a puppy and scared of the vacuum, so I haven’t had a chance to try this tool out yet, but I am looking forward to the day I can groom him without collecting all that hair by hand. It would be so nice to just see it all get sucked up into the vacuum!

Pets will find the Small Ball easier to be around though as it proven to be 30% quieter than the previous small upright model.

The trademark Dyson hygienic bin is the same on the Small Ball but much smaller. Because we have 3 boys, a dog and a 3 story house, it just isn’t big enough for our needs and has to be emptied before the job is done. Because it’s so easy to do, it’s not that big of a deal, with just one push of the button, the bottom of the bin opens up and all that nasty stuff falls right out! Occasionally I need to pull some bunched up dog hair on my own. Smaller houses and apartments, likely won’t fill the capacity as fast.

filters

One of the biggest differences between the DC77 and the Small Ball is the filters. The DC77 doesn’t have any, but the Small Ball has two. The filters were both easy to locate and remove. There are no after purchase costs associated with these, they simply need to be cleaned and dried before putting back in place.

The Dyson Small Ball comes with 5 year warranty that covers labour and parts. For more information visit the Dyson Canada Website.

This sounds like a great little vacuum. I’ve just invested in a cordless Dyson stick vacuum as my older vacuum is heavy and practically impossible for me to use on the stairs.

    • momvstheboys says

yes, stairs can be really tricky! How do you like the Dyson stick? That’s one I’ve never used.

      • Elizabeth Matthiesen says

I’ve not used it yet 🙂 Have to get one of my sons to put up the charger first.

      • Elizabeth Matthiesen says

I love it, wonderful on the stairs and no doubt in my car too. The only thing is that the charge could last longer. Dying to have a go at my mattress too, wonder how much filth I’ll get out of that. 🙂

I have read so many great reviews. I have always wanted to own a Dyson, any type really. When I saw the Small Ball, I fell in love instantly. I love all the features and would be the perfect vacuum for me. Price is the downside. When you are going paycheck to paycheck, food, rent and paying bills are the top priority. Maybe one day.

I think you will really love the small ball, I fell in love with it too, so light and easy to get around everywhere with it. Dyson’s are an investment that’s for sure, but they last for years and years and their customer service is amazing if you ever run into any snags.

Hey … this might be for ME. I literally have three fingers and part of a hand through amputation; neck fusion and back fusion … uggg. Dyson developed a smaller version for smaller areas to clean BUT do they know that this helps a gal like ME with disability issues? Way to go DYSON … I love it …

Thank YOU, MomvstheBoys for bringing this to my attention.

    • momvstheboys says

This definitely sounds like a good contender for you! I honestly felt like it was very easy to move around and very light. Maybe you could test drive a small ball at a local store.

  4. I didn’t know Dyson had a small ball vacuum until now. I would love one. Dyson’s are awesome!

  5. kristen visser says

omg no way ! there is a smaller version? just when you thought Dyson couldn’t get any better! i have always wanted one…one day it will happen

    • momvstheboys says

I actually liked this small ball version better than the full size for it’s light weight, the small canister is the only issue for a larger house.

  6. Lynda Cook says

This looks like a pretty nifty vacuum, looks like it would be great for fast touch-ups especially in my home, but it’s nice to see Dyson listening to peoples needs, they just need to come down in their pricing!!

    • momvstheboys says

It’s definitely great for fast touch ups, I just quickly did my son’s room after he rearranged his space on the weekend. It’s such an easy to use machine!

  7. I have a Dyson cannisters vacuum that I LOVE but I must say, the small ball upright lookslike it would be a great addition to my Dyson family!

  8. I love when you don’t have to buy filters, but rather just wash and put back in. It is something I look for before buying now as I have run into the problem with another vacuum of not being able to get the pieces needed after a few years

  9. Absolutely love the design – especially how compact it is. I have lots of storage space but our current vacuum is bulky and takes up so much space (and doesn’t quite do the job it is supposed to!). Will be replacing our current older model as it is just not efficient with the dog dander and will definitely take the hubby to check this baby out!

  10. Dyson is absolutely my favourite vacuum in the world! I love how they are becoming more compact and self adjusting! This is great!

  11. Jenna Em says

Very catchy title! The vacuum cleaner looks very compact and sounds very powerful. We need to get ourselves a corded Dyson.

  12. Once you’ve used a Dyson……..nothing else will do.

  13. I’ve never tried a Dyson but this one definitely tempts me. I love that it’s light and compact. I would love to use the pet grooming attachment too but like your puppy my cats are not fans of the vacuum! Lol!

  14. kathy downey says

I llove that its light and easy to get around

  15. Judy Cowan says

Love my full size Dyson so this looks great, would be perfect for our Trailer! Will have to check it out in the store!

    • momvstheboys says

Definitely good for small spaces like a trailer and I find dirt really makes it’s way into trailers fast!

  16. Victoria Ess says

Ooo I’m in love with this new Dyson!

  17. kathy downey says

If i could afford it i would take such good care of this baby

  18. Treen Goodwin says

If i could afford one , i would def be buying one , i keep dreaming of owning a great lil vacuum like a Dyson 🙂 thanks for a great review 🙂

  19. Debbie White Beattie says

I wish I could afford a dyson because they’re known to be the best

  20. This would be perfect for me to keep at the office; its not too big and would work beautifully (I have a dog friendly office and it pisses the freak out of me to have dog hair everywhere).

  21. This is the perfect size! Not too heavy for lugging up all the stairs
