Hope for the Future in my Little Boys’ Eyes.

We aren’t a politcal family so in the months leading up the United States election we didn’t speak much of it and definitely not in front of the boys. In time though it became very apparent that despite us parents keeping a low key on it, they were getting their information else where. They very much knew who Hillary Clinton was and they absolutely knew who Donald Trump was. Their names would appear in conversations I overheard the boys having or they would bring them up at the dinner table and without expressing our own views, the boys had picked their candidate.

I have three boys, we have a very male dominated household and I was proud of them, beyond proud, that all three of them were routing for a female president. They had zero qualms with girls being in a leadership position, even one with the utmost power.

The night of the election they were excited and nervous and watched a small part of the coverage before bed. I talked to my oldest as he got ready for his bath about how important it was for a woman to be running for President of the United States. I explained to him that there was a time when girls were not allowed to vote at all, that her opinion wasn’t worthy, that it just didn’t count. He was shocked and angry! He started punching pillows and telling me how unfair that was in a way that only a little boy can. It was sweet to see him defend his Great Grandma, his Grandma, his mom, his friends.

The morning after the election I let the boys know the outcome at breakfast. They were sad. I was sad too, but I was was also very proud.

I see hope for the future in their eyes and their hearts.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and you are so right, our hope lies in our children, they are our future and our country’s future too.

  2. It will definitely be “interesting” for the next little bit.

Learn your children well, someday they will be running our Country. My grandson was upset because Trump got in because of things he heard at School and my advice to him was…..who are we to judge that man he deserves a chance to prove himself like everyone else.

It was definitely a learning opportunity. We talked a lot about being the change you want to see and making sure you vote and have your voice heard.

It’s true we do create little miracles in our children

  5. Love this. My oldest son is only in grade two but he listens to everything I say and I’ve been talking about the US election a lot and he was sad that Hilary didn’t win. I couldn’t believe he was sad. I didn’t think he was even listening. Lesson for me too….always be aware of what I’m saying because my boys have big ears. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Isn’t that true? Sometimes us adults chat away at the front of the van and then we find out my son way in the back was paying attention the whole time lol oops! They only listen when we don’t want them too lol

That’s great that you are starting with these conversations at an early age.

After they started coming home with stuff they heard from other kids, we knew we were going to have to talk about it at home too. It’s probably a good thing.

  7. Great post, I think there is hope for the future but it just may be a rocky road getting there. You should be very proud of your boys!

    • momvstheboys says

Thanks Judy, the road seems rocky right now but I hope the next generation are being raised with a more open mind

  8. It is nice to see the boys see equality as important.

I’m not commenting on Trump or Hilary at all but the sad fact that our kids know about it. Let them be children and turn the news off when they are little.

    • momvstheboys says

So true, we don’t watch the news but the kids at school definitely heard it from somewhere. Unfortunately kids don’t always share accurate information and we had to tell them that not everything they were hearing was true.

I’m not a Trump supporter but I think he will be humbled by the responsibility that is now resting on his shoulders and I think this will be a big learning lesson for the US as well as all other countries that have to do business with them. I wonder who will fill all the jobs that the “illegals” currently do. I suspect that Americans really don’t want to pick fruit in Cali or FL and get paid by the bushel ..but I could very well be wrong too.

  11. Love this!

  12. My daughter (8) had heard at school from a peer that a woman could never be a president – we talked about women’s history in careers, education etc

    • momvstheboys says

I’ve heard from other parents of little girls saying that the boys at school were saying similar things. I’m so glad my boys were not part of any of that!

  13. Sounds like you’re raising your little boys to become fine young men in the future!

  14. Your boys are so lucky to have you as their mom. My husband and I are helping raise our 1 year old grandson and have already started teaching him to be a gentleman. He’s too young to have heard any of the election garbage from the States, so we lucked out there.

    • momvstheboys says

This election was the worst, normally my kids wouldn’t know anything about it but this year everyone was talking about it, even the kids at school

  15. Elva Roberts says

I think it is good that your boys know that girls are as capable as boys. I think every child is a miracle and you are right about eyes of youth.

  16. we are in for a bit of a rough time for the next four years, we need to all that we can to make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren

  17. Elaine Buonsante says

I admire how you dealt with the election with your boys.

  18. Thanks for sharing!

  19. you are so right, thanks for the great read and opinion, something we all have to think about

  20. Elizabeth Matthiesen says

I was so disappointed when I heard the result of the election and now reading some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths I’m in disbelief and shock.

  21. The next few years will tell the tale that’s for sure!

  22. That is a lovely quote on a lovely photo!
