Birds Nest Rice Krispie Treats

Kellogg’s provided me with the Spring Edition Rice Krispies Cereal to create this Birds Nest Rice Krispie Treats, all opinions expressed belong to Mom vs the Boys.

Kellogg’s is celebrating the start of the new spring season with a brand new Spring Edition Rice Krispies Cereal that comes fashionably sprinkled with hues of green and blue. My little bunnies and I took to the kitchen this week to whip up a delicious batch of Rice Krispie Treats with a fabulous spring twist and turned them into adorable little birds nests!

Birds Nest Rice Krispie Treats - Mom vs the Boys

With the Easter weekend upon us, this is a super cute and remarkably easy treat you can make with the kids, but it’s also great anytime during spring. We have a pair of robins that come around every single year to make their nest on our property. They do not always pick the most favourable location but it only takes one or two rainy days when we aren’t outside and their home sweet home is built and ready for eggs.

Birds Nest Rice Krispie Treats

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows
  • -OR-
  • 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Kellogg’s® Spring Rice Krispies® cereal
  • Small egg shaped candy like Mini Eggs
  • Small tube of icing (optional)

Instructions

In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

Add Kellogg’s Spring Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated.

Using a buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray or buttered. Let cool.

Using a cookie cutter roughly the size of your muffin tin, cut circles and place them in the tin pushing down to form a nest. If you find the cereal is sticking to the cookie cutter, just rub some butter on the edges.

Squeeze a dab of icing into the bottom of the nest, this is optional but it will help the eggs stay in place and give them a little more height.

Place about 3 candy eggs into the icing to fill your nest.

The depth of your nest will depend on how big your circle cookie cutter was. We used two different sizes so we had a mixture of deep and shallow nests, but they both looked great. This is such a great activity to do with the kids and let them take the lead because depending on their age and ability they can do all or most of the work themselves. Even small hands can squeeze the icing and place the eggs perfectly into their nests.
