Sharp Air Purifier Review

I was lucky enough recently to receive a Sharp Air Purifier to review. The model I was given was the Plasmacluster Ion (PCI) Air Purifier 2 in 1 unit (KCC100U).

The 2 in 1 feature means it not only purifies the air but it has a humidifying feature as well. The product is pictured here, but to give you some perspective it is a slight bit shorter than my diaper genie and a good bit wider. I know this because my diaper genie sits right beside it, and my diaper genie sits there because it also has a charcoal filter to absorb smell!

I like the idea of having an air purifier and knowing my household air is clean. My boys all suffer from asthma so it is important that they have the best air possible to breathe! The whole family also suffers from seasonal allergies and we just alternate who is having symptoms among us! I can honestly say that since the air purifier was installed our allergies have not been as bad as other years. This is good peace of  mind with a baby too small for medicine in the house, at least we have done everything possible to keep him comfortable while in the confines of our home.

I am not much of a techy, so let’s let Sharp tell you how it works
Sharp’s exclusive and highly esteemed Plasmacluster Ion technology introduced a new system to inactivate airborne viruses. Plasmacluster Ions are now becoming accepted throughout the world as an indispensable air treatment system. The key by-product of positive and negative Ions is Hydroxyl, which robs the airborne particles of the hydrogen necessary to survive. Environmental scientists from around the world now recognize the importance of Hydroxyl as nature’s air cleansing element. In this way, Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion technology replicates the Earth’s natural cleaning system within your personal environment.

What is the purification effective against?
Bacteria & Viruses – Influenza, MRSA, Poliovirus, Coxsackie, Staph, E. Coli, Colon Basillus, Cladosporium, Aspergitlus Cigarette Smoke, Mold Spores & Germs, Pollen, Dust, Pet Odors, Exhaust Fumes, Formaldehyde.

What’s this Ion thing all about??
On completion of air purification, Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion technology provides an Ion balance control mode to increase the rate at which negative ions are generated. In contrast to the natural environment in which there are positive and negative Ions in almost the same proportion, the number of negative Ions is decreased in the city. The Ion balance control feature serves to adjust the balance of positive and negative ions to the ideal natural state.

So, here’s my take:
The Sharp Air Purifier is small and stylish. I don’t mind it being in the house at all. The lights on the outside are actually kind of cool to look at, but I am a really sensitive sleeper and this sits in the hallway outside my door. The first night the glow it illuminated actually bothered me (yes, I’m that sensitive). The next day I discovered that you can just turn those lights off and problem solved.
This unit claimed to be ‘library quiet’ and I’ll be honest, I didn’t believe it would be. I was wrong, they were right. This thing is SUPER QUIET! as long as it is on the lowest fan setting, you almost don’t hear it at all.
As for the smell removal, I found that unless the diaper genie was right next to it, it didn’t really take the smell out of the air. We have it in an open hallway, so it doesn’t really work that well for smell, but one time Little Buddy had a stinkier than usual diaper change that we couldn’t stomach and we put the unit right in his bedroom and shut the door. When we came back shortly after,  the smell was gone.
I do believe the air purifier gave us all relief from allergy symptoms this summer and I am looking forward to it keeping our air clean this fall as Big Brother starts the ‘germ factory’ we call school. Here’s hoping it saves us all this winter from sharing cold after cold, even just a little.

I received this product for the purpose of the review, no other compensation was given and all opinions expressed are my own.
