Well in case you haven’t guessed, with 3 very young boys, we aren’t exactly frequent fliers!
It’s been a loooonnnnggg time since this Mama got on a plane, like honeymoon long and well, I clearly didn’t make some good travel choices on my recent trip to the 2011 Nissan Quest Press Event.
Here’s a breakdown of how to avoid the need for a chiropractor’s visit when you get home and other good rules to follow
#1- Wear sensible travel shoes
Need an example of what is NOT an appropriate pair of travel shoes??
There ya go! Do not and I repeat do not wear these! My feet hurt before I even made it to the airport! I had a two hour drive to get there and my foot hurt just pushing on the gas pedal and keeping my leg flexed due to the heel the whole time. I seriously underestimated the amount of walking there would be to get to and inside the airport. The boots are new and not broken in and after two days of these, my feet are still throbbing! Plus dump a ton of weight to carry on top of them and you got yourself two aching tootsies
#2- Use Appropriate Carry-On Luggage
A ton of weight you say? yes! a whole sack of potatoes ton of weight from my Carry-On luggage! Even though the overpacker inside of me called out to bring two and three extra outfits for everyday and my entire bathroom cabinet of make up and medicine, I was smart enough to trim it all down to fit into a carry on, thus avoiding the hassle of checking luggage. But not being part of the jet setting crowd my luggage is a little outdated in terms of handy conveniences like wheels and handles! My larger suitcases have them, but not the carry on! I had to actually haul that dead weight with me the whole time and walk in those shoes! Someone call me a chiropractor stat! Poor aching back, neck and shoulders today! 🙁
Save your self and get something like this
#3- Bring a Translator
When your travel destination brings you to a place where you are scratching your head trying to recall grade nine french and wondering how you even passed that class, it’s always best to have a travel companion who is bi-lingual!!! Lucky for me that came in the fabulous form of Lynette from My Wee View! So now you just have to smile and nod and think inside your head “yeah, what she said” while following her around!
#4- Got techy gadgets at your disposal? Use them
When you and your navigator are both directionally challenged, use that fancy GPS system that is staring you in the face! Well, but then I would have to really know how to use the GPS system wouldn’t I?? Love Love Love this thing and desperately need one in my own vehicle! Instead we may have given you West Coast girls a bad driving name because our Nissan Quest had BC plates! lol sorry!
#5- Avoid Flight Delay Rage
got Road Sky Rage?? Try not melting into a puddle of goo when your plane gets delayed, and delayed and delayed some more. Even when you think you are finally going to get home and they board you all onto a plane and then tell you that you are not going anywhere for another hour and 40 minutes, just breathe deep and watch Swan Lake, the whole while cursing under your breath! This is not easy to do when your feet and back and shoulders hurt from wearing those damn boots and carrying that crappy carry on and only having 2 hours of sleep and being completely starving but still saying no to the the dry disgusting pretzels, but do it anyway!
Ohhhh I could go on forever here….. got sleep issues? bring drugs for that, Will you get the shakes from internet deprivation? bring your laptop or a handy little iphone for that!
I debated endlessly on whether or not to bring the laptop and left it at home. Good thing because the extra weight would have crippled me, but I hated being unplugged the whole time. I hate the idea of an iphone but it sure was handy when fellow travellers where checking flight delays and weather reports. Not to mention being able to tweet eachother and the outside world.
Okay last one I can’t resist!
When you go to bed here:
and wake up here
well, first off you’ll know it’s too early because the moon is still out, BUT, then just smile and thank God for amazing opportunities!!
Stay tuned for my post on the all new 2011 Nissan Quest!!
