Twitter Tips

Are you new to the Tweet Machine? not getting as many followers are you would like? well, here are some easy twitter tips from me to you that might help jump the numbers a bit or encourage some interaction with your tweeps.
(this may or may not be disguised as a list of twitter pet peeves lol)

1) Don’t be an Egghead!
No one wants to talk to an egg. If you still have that boring generic default egg as your profile pic – change it now! Totally understandable if you don’t want to splash your mug across the net, but there’s got to be something you can post to represent you. Blog logo? Fancy Initial? Favourite cartoon character? Taylor Lautner without a shirt on? -if you pick the last one you are guaranteed a follow back from me! 😉

2) Who Are You?
Do NOT leave your profile bio blank. I see this sooooo often! This can be the make or break of a follow. Give people something, anything, to help them identify with you. If you are a blogger be sure to include your url and don’t fill this with random ‘key words’.
It doesn’t have to be super personal, I don’t need your resume or house address, but tell me how we might have something in common. Give me an idea of what you might be tweeting about. Are you a mom? Do you have hobbies? Are you trying to sell me insurance from Texas? Do you enjoy movies that feature Taylor Lautner with his shirt off? All of those are good for me to know. Be clever, be fun, be meaningful, whatever ya like, but most importantly BE YOURSELF!

3) Spam-Me-Not
Never send people Auto DMs, please! If you are currently doing this, stop!
This is the #1 most complained about feature I hear about on twitter. If you can’t type 140 characters out yourself, don’t sent it to me. Even if you think it’s polite to thank every single person who follows you, don’t do it with an auto generated DM. It’s not welcome. Be personal. Auto DMs are annoying. Period.

4) Be a Follower
If you want to be followed, get out there and follow others! You`ve seen those people/companies with 1000+ followers but only follow 10? Don’t be that person. Be friendly, follow people/brands you are interested in and not just because you are looking for a follow back.

5) Hash Anyone?
[What is a hashtag?- People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category]

Use hashtags where appropriate, especially if you are using twitter to advertise your giveaways. Always use #win and #giveaway so contesters can easily find your tweets.

6) Hip Hop
Looking for quick and easy follows to get started? Consider adding your handle (@momvstheboys) to some Twitter Hops. But don’t just randomly start clicking on everyone on the list and walk away, be sure to send them a tweet (you can do this individually or in groups) to let people know you are from the hop. Otherwise, you are just another follower and they have no idea where you came from and that you should get a follow back.

7) Par-tay
[What is a twitter party? A twitter party is a fast and fun virtual party, using the twitter platform. Usually held in the evening, twitter parties typically last 1-2 hours and are a way for people to connect and discuss a topic of choice. Most twitter parties have an expert panelist and party host to keep the party on topic.]

I’ll be honest, personally I’m not a fan of  Twitter Parties, but I join in on a few and have even co-hosted before (FYI- twitter party can lead to twitter jail) But from what I hear, most people like these events or they say they do anyway. I always hear comments like “that twitter party was so awesome” but I don’t get it, I have no idea why or what made the party so great, even if I was at the same one. Maybe because they won something. I’ve never won anything at a twitter party and if I was looking to win something I would try entering a blog giveaway that takes only a minute to enter instead of taking up an hour or two of my night hoping for a prize. Twitter parties fly by quickly and are often difficult to keep up with. There are lots of sites to help with controlling the stream, I’ve tortured my tweeps trying out a few, but the one I like the most and is really user friendly is Tweet Chat.

Well, let’s hear it from you instead, do you like to party with your tweeps? What do you like about it? What draws you in?
