Last week I took a few of my favourite people in the world to see the Canadian opening night performance of How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular at the John Labatt Centre in London. You could say the show had more than a few Hiccups!
The show was delayed for a good 40 minutes or so as over 3000 people wandered the lobby wondering why we couldn’t take our seats. Since the show had an original 7pm start time, this made for a late evening for some little ones and we saw more than one sleeping babe slumped over a daddy’s shoulder on the way out of the arena. At intermission we were informed that the disappointment would not stop there, certain parts of the second act were being taken out to ensure the actors safety. Maybe they couldn’ t train those dragons after all?? This lead to a somewhat choppy storyline and since I have no idea what we actually missed I can’t say whether it was the production or the fact that we missed pieces of it that brought that on. My friend and nephew had never seen the movie so when we left, I asked them if they knew why in the second half the vikings were attacking the big dragon, they both said no.
As a gesture, everyone in attendance was offered a new ticket to come back on another date, but having driven a good distance to get there in the first place, this wasn’t a possiblity for us.
Despite the technical hiccups, Hiccup and his crew put on a fabulous performance! The show was absolutely amazing!! I have seen a number of wonderful theatre acts in my day and I was simply blown away by this, just awed. The size of the dragons will have your jaw on the floor and they are so true to life you will swear they are real! They blink, they walk, they breath smoke and fire and they even fly! It was an exciting show indeed!
The actors were fabulous as well, showing us fun dance moves and amazing gymnastics! Hiccup started the show off by traveling up a huge vertical wall and using imagery projected onto the wall, he appeared to be running on a path, leaping and even falling down a cliff among the trees. The timing and creativity was incredible!
The show has many more dates ahead and will be back in Canada in August at the Air Canada Centre (Toronto) and the Bell Center (Montreal) before dipping back down to the US. The show will resurface north of the border in the fall for dates in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. I’m sure by then they will have all the crinkles ironed out and no delays!
