Schools out for Summer…..ahhhh for a work at home mom, those words are bittersweet! While I long for those lazy days at the beach like any kid, I also have deadlines I need to make. Entertaining the kids can be a full time job over summer holidays, but I have a little help from DK Publishing!
Summer’s are made for blockbuster movies and my boys are pretty fanatic over a lot of movies that they aren’t even allowed to see yet! It’s a boy thing to be infatuated with super heroes, star wars and Harry Potter, but the movies are often made for an older age category. We will probably start getting into some of these movies this Summer, but I find reading books about the characters first give the movies a whole new meaning! We’ve already started to read Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, but my seven year is a die hard Avengers fan too! We picked out a few books from the DK Canada website to surprise him with for passing grade one.
The books arrived and they look fabulous! Large hardcover books, filled with every Avengers character there ever was! Hubster was super excited to dig into these books and check them out too. I’m kind of glad he did too because after we looked through them I had a bit of an eye opener. Apparently, there have been a number of women on the Avengers team over the years, and I was reminded of how ‘sexy’ they are often drawn lol. We decided to leave the Avengers the Ultimate Character Guide for a later date when he is older because of some of the drawings that appeared either sexier or more violent than we liked but we still gifted him the the Avengers The Ultimate Guide to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, because it was a little softer in imagery and still filled to very brim with information on everyone from his favourite The Hulk to characters that were new to him like Daredevil!
The book is 207 pages long and feels very grown up! He was crazy excited to receive it yesterday and has been pouring through the pages. I noticed he even has a bookmark marking his pages! I just love anything that encourages boys to read and makes it fun for them! My guy needs to boost his reading and writing for next year and this is a perfect book to get him interested in figuring out words!
Whether you love Disney princesses, superheroes or Jedis and droids, DK’s Visual Guides, Essential Guides and Character Encyclopedias are the perfect way to bring the excitement of your favourite movies home. Full-page profiles of characters, behind-the-scenes information and page after page of fantastic amazing photographs and images from the films make each of these books a must-have for any film fan!
The Avengers Ultimate Guide to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes should get us through a few of those “Mom, I’m bored” moments over the summer! Thanks DK Publishing!

Oh those books look awesome! It been a while since I’ve been to a comic book store, and now I’m itching to go, LOL. Just checked out the DK site and their prices are really reasonable! I might just have to check out their comic section now, heh. 😉
I found their prices really reasonable too!
I love that you are trying to do “cool” stuff for your little guy… and your husband enjoys too! these sound great, i will look for them:)
Oh I know a little man who would LOVE these, he know all there is to know about all of the marvel characters. I will keep these in mind for his birthday next month.
We live Marvel and DK here. My boys usually flip through to find the characters they like best and read up on them. Such excelent quality
Those look awesome! I thought about getting them for our oldest, but haven’t yet. I have so many books from DK, and every one has been amazing. Even my non-book loving hubby loves them!!
That looks pretty awesome. I’m sure my girls would love the Jedi one. So much detail! (and yeah, comic book babes are drawn over the top. Even some of the G rated books aren’t really)
I am in the same predicament. I would love to just enjoy the summer with the kids, but I’m working from home too. Fortunately my husband is home for the summer, so I can send them off on errands with him! DK books will be used to occupy kids here too! 🙂
