Synopsis
Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson bring to life the untold true story about the origins of one of the most treasured Disney classics of all time. John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) directs this acclaimed film, which reveals the surprising backstory behind the making of Mary Poppins. Determined to fulfill a promise to his daughters, Walt Disney (Hanks) tries for twenty years to obtain the rights to author P.L. Travers’ (Thompson) beloved book. Armed with his iconic creative vision, Walt pulls out all the stops, but the uncompromising Travers won’t budge. Only when he reaches into his own complicated childhood does Walt discover the truth about the ghosts that haunt Travers, and together, the set Mary Poppins free.
My Take
While I’ve never been much of a fan of either Tom Hanks or Emma Thompson, I really enjoyed them both in this film. They truly became their characters for me and Tom was no longer Tom Hanks, he was Walt Disney. I’ve always been a bit of a history lover so the story line was incredibly interesting to me and I loved the idea of going behind the scenes of the making of a Disney musical! Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and it left me with a desire to know more! The flashbacks in to the auther P.L. Traver’s life were so interesting, but all from the same time frame. I’m so curious to learn more about her, she was quite the character!! Now off to watch Mary Poppins! It’s been too long!
Take a sneak peek here!
I watched this movie last week and we all loved it!
I recently watched this movie and I loved it. I was almost in tears the whole time. Fabulous movie!
Thanks for the recommendation – I’m always looking for good films to watch. I do love Tom Hanks, so this one should be fun.
I can’t wait to see it – I love Disney!
I cannot believe how much Tom Hanks looks like Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks. Amazing. What a lovely story about adapting a well-loved children’s book into a film.
I am a big fan of both Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks and love the diversity of the roles they play, and who doesn’t love Mary Poppins! Although I am a huge Disney fan until now I have had very little interest in Walt Disney himself. Thanks for sharing Jennifer, you have changed my mind, the story of making Mary Poppins is as interesting as Mary Poppins itself.
