My oldest son just turned five years old and to help make the occasion special, I surprised him at school with some funky Tie Dye Cupcakes for his Kindergarten class! He was really excited to celebrate with all of his little friends and the class loved them!! If you know someone who loves tie dye or even just bright rainbow colours, I’m sure these colourful cupcakes will be a big hit!
Groovy Tie Dye Cupcakes
Here’s how to make these tie dye cupcakes
Grab any box of white cake mix and mix as directed.
Separate batter into 4-6 bowls evenly (I used 6)
Colour each bowl a different colour using bold food colouring, I went with yellow, orange, pink, purple, green and blue
Drop a spoonful of each one into a cupcake liner, you’ll want the liners to be about 3/4 full when all colours are in
Bake as directed on box
They look really psychedelic like this, but cupcakes need icing right? otherwise their muffins! lol
I decided to go with plain white buttercream icing, spread evenly over the entire cupcake. Then I used gel icing (comes in skinny tubes and can be found at grocery stores and bulk food stores) to make tie dye style patterns by drawing a coloured circles on the icing and dragging a toothpick through the gel design. The starburst pattern looked particularly fun!
There you have it, Groovy Tie Dye Cupcakes! They were a big hit with the class and got a lot of “oooohhh and ahhhhhs” when the kids bit into the cupcake revealing the crazy tie dye cake inside!
You could easily make a full sheet cake using the same method by dropping spoonfuls of the batter into the pan and swirling the colours around with a knife. Go ahead and be creative!
Fun!
These cupcakes are awesome, I believe how well they turned out and that you took the extra time to do it.
