Perfume Ads Stink

I’ve been a fan of marketing and media since I was a teen, always one to clip out great ads and hang them on my bedroom walls. My favourites? the United Colours of Beneton ads will always hold a special place in my heart. So I’ve been aware and watching as our society pushes the boundaries further and further until it all becomes a blur as to what is socially acceptable and what is not, in the marketplace. But who defines what is ‘socially’ acceptable? well, surely we do right?  after all we do make up society.
My eyes were re focused again this past year at Blissdom Canada when I had the opportunity to view ‘Miss Representation’, thanks to Urban Moms. Since then, I have watched it a number of times and have it saved on my PVR. This is an enlightening documentary that focuses on how women are portrayed in the media. While I didn’t agree with everything in the film, I think no one could argue that we could do a better job of showing young women positive role models, and teaching our boys that women are not just bodies.

In my younger (sigh) years I used to read a lot of magazines, since having three boys, I just don’t get the chance and the ones I do get my hands on fall more towards parenting and home making topics. Recently, out of the blue, I started to receive free copies of Elle, a fashion magazine, and while I used to spend a lot of time swooning over the advertisements, I now find myself more than a little disturbed. Primarily perfume ads are creating quite the stink.

Eva Mendes
Kim Kardashian
Mariah Carey

What’s going on in Hollywood these days? Do you have a feeling that A-listers are selling themselves out?  Here’s one that makes me throw up a little every. single. time I look at it-

Dakota Fanning

See what I mean about pushing boundaries? This ad is wrong on so many levels.
My point is  that women should be able to show some modesty, look nice, be respected and not hold perfume bottles between their breasts or legs in order to have a successful ad campaign. Maybe it’s time actresses took a stand, said no to looking trashy and scandalous, they are the ones who can afford to push back. What are we telling our next generation of little girls??? When actresses keep pushing ‘sexy’ down our throats, we start to believe it’s normal. But Hollywood is far from normal. Our children need to grow up seeing images of ‘real’ women.
and don’t get me started on Beyonce’s Fever commercial. No, I don’t want my boys watching this on tv.
I want to see CLASSY  become the new Sexy.

What are your thoughts? sexy or scandalous? how far is too far in terms of product placement?

You’re so right, I’ve never paid attention to it before but there’s no way they’re gonna attract a woman that way. Add a chocolate bar or piece of pie!!!! lol
