Tips on Growing your own Herb Garden with Pefferlaw Organic Soils

I have a confession, I do not have a green thumb.

It’s true. Not even a light shade of green. But it doesn’t stop me from trying.

Hubs and I had been talking one night about how we just love fresh herbs and wouldn’t it be nice to have access to those fresh herbs whenever we liked. Knowing about this thumb of mine, we didn’t even entertain the thought of starting an herb garden, but all that changed when I opened my inbox a couple days later and saw an invitation from Pefferlaw to try out their organic soil.

Divine intervention??

So, putting a gardening glove over those thumbs of mine, I wholeheartedly agreed to give growing some herbs a try in a window planter.

With the fear that this crazy project was never going to work, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money so I first picked up some plastic pots. ermmm…..not very pretty. I quickly upgraded to some classic terra cotta pots. But then, I found a a three pot white ceramic number and tossed the penny pinching away! If all else fails, I’ll plant some pansies!

Here’s some tips and tricks from Pefferlaw Peat Products Inc. on making the most of
your small spaces by creating an organic herb garden

HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN HERB GARDEN

How to get started:
• Decide what you will want to grow and where you will be setting up your
herb container garden. Generally your herbs will need 8 to 10 hours of
sunlight.
• Even your little ones can help out! Teach your children about how to care for
a small plant or herb by getting them involved in the process from the
beginning.

What you need: Once you know the size and span of your garden…..
• Select containers – your container can be a store bought pot, a disposable
container or something creative like a burlap bag, tea pot or colander.
• Things to consider. Your containers must allow for drainage (holes in the
bottom) and deep enough for the plant roots to grow and expand.
• If using a recycled container, you will want to ensure that it did not
previously contain a harmful substance and is food safe.
• Organic Soil
• Drainage dish

Tips and Tricks:
• If you are a new gardener, or want instant results – you might want to
start out with young plants, available at any nursery or garden center. If
you are patient and have the time to nurse your garden along, you can
grow your herbs from seed.

Soil and Planting
• Use a soil with vermiculite and perlite which helps aerate and capture
moisture for healthy roots growth. These are the small bits of white and
metallic you see in potting soils.
• Choosing a Certified Organic Soil such as Pefferlaw Brand Hanging Basket
& Planter Mix or Premium Potting Soil which are fortified with natural
fertilizers ensures you will have healthy growth that is not contaminated
with unsafe waste or chemicals.

  1. Cool! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

I’ve been contemplating doing an indoor herb garden this year – there is certainly something to be said about fresh herbs!

  2. I hope it works for you! I would love to grow some herbs and vegetables. I am little bit nervous as well because I seem to kill plants. However, I do perfectly fine with my 13month old lol. Some of us just don’t have a green thumb or really need to practice gardening. I think it is a lost art.

  3. We’ve been using Pefferlaw Peat products for growing for as long as I can remember – and it’s only 15 minutes from where I live! So neat to see a company local to me featured on your blog.

  4. I have always meant to do this at home, yet never actually done it. Those are super cute pots!
