The Lighthouses of Massachusetts #XPloreMass

The summer before we had kids, my husband and I took a two week road trip to the east coast of Canada. We fell in the love with the quaint beauty, the sandy beaches and the many many lighthouses! We don’t see too many of those in Ontario, but in coastal regions they make an interesting focal point dotted along the waters edge!

The state of Massachusetts is home to many islands to explore and discover. When people think of Massachusetts islands, the first places that usually come to mind are Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. While these islands are well-known and loved, there are many other places to seek adventure or relaxation in the waters of Massachusetts. Let’s take a tour of some of the whimsical lighthouses!

Pretty gorgeous right? Each one has it’s own subtle unique style and history. But lighthouses aren’t just an adorable beach structure, they have an important job to do. They mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Not all lighthouses are still used today, as upkeep can be quite expensive and we now have more modern electronic navigational systems in place, but few could argue that they still hold their place in the hearts of coastal communities and visitors alike.

I think it would be a really fun family adventure to create a little treasure map of all the lighthouses on the islands of Massachusetts and seek to visit them all!

  4. Treasure maps, how exciting! We too went out east before kids and now that ours are older (3.5 years), it’s time to go back. The lobsters are calling. Thanks for the reminder.
