I Heart New York

i-love-new-york

I’m a small town girl, but I love to visit the big city and when it comes to cities, it doesn’t get bigger or better than New York! The Big Apple is full of energy and life that you just can’t experience anywhere else! Take a look at my top 5 reasons why I Love New York!!

central park new york city

#5 Central Park

Central Park was the first public landscaped park in all of the United States and is one of New York Cities most visited landmarks. We didn’t get to spend too much time here but it was a nice break from the concrete jungle of the streets of New York. “Central Park offers hundreds of special attractions for solo explorers and families across its 843 acres: green meadows, sprawling waters, gardens, unique bridges, performance centers, educational facilities and classical architecture.” (centralpark.com)

#2 Architecture

From modern skyscapers to old historic churches, I was in love at every turn with New York City! Everything was so impressive and grand! The subway is a quick way to get around, but spend some time just walking and walking along the streets, you never know what great building you will see next! Be sure to get up to the top of the Empire State Building to see the city from above as well! It’s especially gorgeous at night!

#3 Times Square

When we arrived to NYC, we checked into our tiny hotel, the room was probably the size of a large closet, but we didn’t intend to spend much time in it anyway! We dropped our bags and immediately started out for Times Square! While standing at a street corner waiting for a light to change we heard a man yelling “mama, mama” behind us. I turned to see what was happening just as an elderly lady in a runaway wheelchair came careening into my legs! Thank goodness neither ones of us was hurt and all that was left was a funny memory for me (probably not so funny for her!) but it really taught me that in New York City, there are surprises at every corner! The sights, the sounds, the smells! It’s all so overwhelming and distracting – in a good way! Unless you are that lady in the wheel chair who was let go of!

broadway new york city

#4 Broadway

Did you know that Phantom of the Opera is currently the longest running show in Broadway history, with over 9100 performances? I’ve been  a fan of musical theatre since highschool so getting to see a few broadway shows was kind of a pinch me moment! You can pick up tickets on the day of production at seriously discounted rates and even better if you are still a student. Hubs happened to have an old student card in his wallet! (shhh..don’t tell!) My favourite was Chicago and it was super cool that Paige Davis came out to sign autographs after the show! That’s me and her above, yes, I had some serious blonde hair going on at the time!

#5 Everyday Surprises

The magic of New York City is waking up everyday and not really knowing what’s in store for you, even if your a bit of a holiday planner like me! There are little surprises around every corner! From potential celeb sitings to window shopping, hot dog stands and being part of a live tv audience, there’s something for everyone and new and exciting things await you every step of the way! I can’t wait to get back to the Big Apple!

Have you been to New York City? What is your favourite part?

  3. For most of my life I lived in the suburbs of NYC and knew once my kids left home I wanted to movie into Manhattan. They did a few years ago and my husband and I moved into NYC and I never want to leave. I love it. We never even have to make plans to have fun. We just take a walk and have a great time.

I LOVE New York too!! We went for 10 days a couple of years ago and when I first arrived I was overwhelmed but after one night I was hooked. I loved Central Park (and wish we had spent more time just wandering there), the US Open (big tennis fan, so had to plan our trip while it was on of course!), the shopping, Broadway (saw Wicked, it was wicked!), the food (PJ Clarke’s was a favourite) & drinks, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, the statue of liberty/Ellis Island tour, the library, the 9/11 memorial sites (a very sombre day on our trip, but we had to pay our respects especially since we were there on 9/11), the art, the architecture, the museums. I could go on… I would love to go back one day and do it all over again, we had the best time.

  23. Christy Martin says

I have been a couple of times. At the time I had a bf family that lived on Long Island. So we would do a day trip and literally bus it in with the 6am commuters. We made use of our time and it included shopping at Filene’s Basment! Eating 3 times and returning to Long Island after dark. Very much doing it on a budget. I so want to return and do it right. Get a shoebox hotel room and spend a week or at least more than 1 day!
