It’s no surprise that December is the highest spending season of the year for families, how did you fair this year? Did you stick to your budget or go overboard? I actually went overboard and then guilt set in and I ended up returning some stuff before Christmas! lol The important thing is I caught myself before making a big mistake.
To help manage the family budget, RateSupermarket.ca is here to help, offering free, up to date information on the latest personal finance offers, guides, tips and articles to help you get more from your purchases during the holidays and all year round.
The best new tool is the Rewards Calculator, which picks out the best credit card on the market for you, based on the rewards you want (gas, cash back, travel or special rewards) and your current spending habits. When you have the right card with the right rewards, your holiday generosity comes back to you! win-win!
The Rewards Calculator is quick and easy to use and doesn’t require any personal information like your name, address, or phone number. IF you want a copy emailed to you, there is an option for that, otherwise you can skip it. Next, you simply select your current card for comparison purposes then answer a couple of questions on your income and finances. You can estimate here, no reason to pull out your bank statements! The Rewards Calculator will then deliver your top three cards that will earn you the most back, based on your reward interests (Travel, cash back etc)
Setting a good example is the best way to teach kids about saving money! Here are 4 other fun ways to teach kids about saving money:
1. Use clear saving jars so your child can see where the money is going. Label jars with Spend, Save and Donate and have your child split money between the jars. This allows your child to buy a toy or game they have been wanting, but still save and a small portion can go to a special donation of a toy for a Christmas toy drive for example. Kids learn about both short and long term saving as well as giving to others.
2. Do they have something special they are saving up for? To reward excellent saving and to help your child reach their goal, consider matching their savings
3. Enlist your childs help in cutting coupons! It’s a great way to teach your child about savings and discounts.
4. Have FUN! Play time is learning time for kids! My boys love to ‘set up shop’ and have their brothers buy items from their store. They also love to play restaurant and work as a team cooking and serving. These are great learning opportunities to show them how adults pay for their meal and tip their waiters! Have them create a menu with prices and get out the play money so they can shop for items and practice giving back change!
