Show off those pearly whites for National Oral Health Care Month

Did you know that April is National Oral Health Care Month?

When was the last time your family headed off to the dentist? Our next visit for the boys is right around the corner and I love that our dental clinic  accommodates all three boys at once so we can get in and get out and on with our day! All of our visits are enjoyable with a fun play corner for the kids, free wifi for the parents and the most amazing staff!

I remember when my oldest boy was little and we brought him in for his first visit. He was so happy to be there, playing with all of the toys, until it was time to see the dentist of course and then the nerves set in and he got scared! The dentist was so great with him, patient and kind, and playful! When he asked what my son had been for Halloween, he finally got my son to open his mouth super wide by getting him roar just like the dragon he had dressed up as, and quickly counted his teeth!

My middle boy ended up having an emergency visit to see the dentist quite young as he fell and chipped his tooth. We made a call to our dental clinic and they made sure we had an appointment right away. Everything was okay and thankfully there was no damage to the tooth or the nerves. The chipped front tooth complimented his rough and tumble boy personality and it was actually quite adorable while he was young. Once he was older and had started school though the dentist decided to fix that tooth up and you literally couldn’t tell it was ever damaged! It was shocking how perfectly the tooth matched all of his others and he had a perfect smile!

Having a good relationship with your dentist is key!

Your dentist can help detect, diagnose, and treat/prevent problems you might not know about, so it’s best to keep up with regular appointments and be open and honest about your health when they ask. Poor oral health can affect your quality of life including a person’s physical, mental and social well-being, but it’s so easy to prevent.

Here are some tips for a great smile and healthy mouth

  • Brush for 2-3 minutes at least twice a day to prevent tooth decay and gum disease
  • Eat a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fruits & veggies, and lean meats.
  • See your dentist regularly
  • Wear a mouth guard when playing sports or other aggressive activities
  • Reduce your risks caused from stress, smoking and drug use

Thanks for the reminder, I am over-due for a check-up so I should make one!

  2. We had a great dentist growing up – I heard he had Game Boys for kids getting fillings but I could never confirm this as I was actually a proud member of his No Cavity Club (I’m still cavity-free and there’s a distinct possibility my picture’s still up).

  3. Finding a dentist you like and trust is SO important! I can’t imagine not seeing my dentist twice a year and she does so much to make us always feel welcome.

I wish we’d had better dental care when I was young, there was no such thing as flossing, mouth washes etc. Oh well too late now, better to check that the grandkids are taking good care of their teeth.

  5. I really should get a mouth guard for playing hockey!

I feel lucky that my parents always emphasized good oral hygiene when we were young so we got to build good habits early.

  7. Dental and oral care is a must in my home/family; my mother was quite strict about it (for which I am tremendously grateful for now). My boys love their dentist and look forward to each visit. We visit every 6 months like clockwork and have only had one oral emergency when my youngest had a run in with a swing.

I am on the grandkids about this all the time,it pays off

  9. My kids teeth are pretty healthy. I always stress the importance of good oral hygiene.

  10. Unfortunately I know my dentist all too well due to many dental problems over the past 15 years, but I am grateful they know how to take care of my needs and those of my family. By the way, seriously adorable photos of your boys Jennifer. 🙂

thanks Suzanne, sorry to hear you are having some dental trouble, it’s a good thing you have a dentist to call on!

  11. Those are great tips. Good dental health is so important and it’s so great to start from a very young age.

  12. I haven’t seen my Dentist in almost two years. I need to get in. Thank you for the reminder. Also, I never thought to see a dentist about a chipped tooth before so thanks for bringing up the nerve damage. As a mom with a rowdy toddler I’m sure this will come up… again.

  13. Love those smiles! We haven’t had any chipped teeth here… yet. But I would not be surprised if we do run into that in the future! Oh the fun of having boys

  14. I started early on with my four so that they got used to visiting the dentist. Now, I have no issues with teeth brushing or dentist visits.
