We are a family of beach bums, all five of us could just spend hours reading, playing and relaxing on the beach. The kids love to get in the water and swim, but to be honest, I’m more of a land lover, that warm sand is far more appealing to me than the cold water. It’s mostly for this reason that I try to avoid sunscreen as much as possible. I know, I know, sunscreen is important, and I always smother the boys in it, but there’s nothing I hate more than getting all greasy and having the sand stick all over me. I’m definitely not dipping into the freezing water of Ontario lakes to wash it off!
Banana Boat SunComfort Sand Challenge
Banana Boat has a brand new sunscreen out on the market now that was made for life on the beach! They were so confident that it would solve my sunscreen/sand dilemma that they challenged me to try their Banana Boat SunComfort Sunscreen Spray up against any competing brand I saw fit! umm….wow!!!
I chose this Neutrogena Beach Defense spray because it’s a well known and respected brand, and was also close in price (it was just slightly more money than the Banana Boat). Now to see which one kept the sand off better.
I sprayed on arm with the Banana Boat SunComfort Sunscreen and waited for it to dry completely. I noticed that it dried completely and didn’t leave a wet or shiny glisten to my skin at all. Then I pressed my arm into some blue sand so you could see it well.
Same goes for the competing brand, though I did notice that the spray never did dry completely. I could still see a slight oily substance on my arm after I allowed both arms to dry for the same length of time.
Next, I just brushed the sand off of my arm, much like I would have done at the beach.
The results are in!
The Neutrogena did pretty good but not great, I still had some sand left stuck to my arm and I really didn’t like the greasy feeling I had. In all honestly, this is why I usually skip sunscreen on myself. It just makes me feel gross.
The Banana Boat did an excellent job, the sand brushed clean away, only leaving a couple of grains. The best part was my skin didn’t feel oily at all.
The Verdict
I always find it really fun to do an experiment with products, especially when I can compare brands. The Banana Boat SunComfort Sunscreen Spray was easily the winner here and I was super surprised and very impressed with it! I’ll have no problem using it this summer at the beach and plan to stock up on it for winter getaways to sunny desinations! The price of the Banana Boat SunComfort spray was the same or a little lower than many of the other brand name sprays I saw and obviously works so much better, it’s a no brainer on making a choice in the sunscreen aisle this year!

We use banana boat sunscreen because it doesn’t irritate my oldest daughter’s sensitive skin.
Oily sunscreens are the worst! I do really love that the cans spray upside-down now so I can do my own back. I used to need a cabana boy to help me! Tragic 😉
I love the neutrogena sunscreen but don’t think I have tried the spray! It looks like a great way to apply sunscreen!
