Here’s a not so secret fact about me; I do NOT have a green thumb. I wish it was a secret, but seriously one look at my dying front garden and the whole street knows that this lady has a thumb as black as they come. My garden is where plants go to die. sniff.
My dream would be to one day have a thriving vegetable garden, and I still might try even though I can’t keep flowers alive for more than a few days. In the mean time, I have a little trick you may or may not already be using to re grow garden produce you already have.
I discovered this little kitchen tip a few years back and now I do it all of the time. You can quickly and easily re-grow green onion, and yes, if I can do it, so can you! It’s a great money saver!
The next time you pick up a bunch of green onions at the grocery store, don’t discard the white ends after you’ve used up all the greens. Instead, stick the white root end into a small glass of water.
It will only take a couple days before you start noticing new green shoots starting to regrow. In less than a week, they’ll be back to their original size, and you can just trim off as much as you need, whenever you need it. It’s best to place the glass in a sunny window, but I leave mine right on my kitchen counter with only a bit of indirect sunlight and they always grow right back up! Change the water every few days to keep it fresh.
Once the stems are long again, snip them into small pieces and place the cuts into a plastic freezer bag or bottle and freeze. You can just shake the amount out that you need when you are working on a future recipe that calls for green onion.
Although I do have a pretty green thumb, I was not successful at this. The cause mainly being that I only have one small east facing window – I believe it just didn’t get enough sunshine 🙁
really? I don’t even put mine in the window, just on the kitchen counter and they grow like crazy!
Such a great tip! I love green onions. I never knew you could do this.
It’s super easy, I grow them back a few times and then toss them
This is brilliant! Who knew? lol I am such a non gardener but actually managed to grow tomatoes, sugar snap peas, cucumbers on our balcony this year! I’ll definitely remember this tip!
I had green onion is my window all summer fresh ready to use anytime i love it
I’ve done this before and it works well!
