This Breakfast Toast Cups recipe was sponsored by Dempster’s. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.
Did you know? Honey is on trend! The Canadian production of honey is at an all-time high thanks to a rise in health consciousness, plus it just tastes really good, so it’s no surprise to me that honey has ‘beecome’ something to buzz about! See what I did there?
1,504 honey related products have launched between 2010-2015 mostly coming from the food category, and the latest product is hitting store shelves as we speak – Dempster’s Honey Wheat Bread.
As a family of five, we go through our fair share of bread and I love that this one has no artificial colours or flavours and is made with real Canadian honey. Whether it’s a classic PB&J sandwich or something a little more fancy, our family has a way of incorporating bread into almost every meal.
I’m really excited to share with you one of my favourites, the Breakfast Toast Cup. It’s quick and easy and not necessarily just for breakfast, it makes a great healthy lunch option as well.
Breakfast Toast Cups
Makes 2 servings
- 4 slices Dempster’s Honey Wheat bread, crusts removed
- 4 eggs
- 4 slices of ham
- shredded Cheddar cheese
- salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Start by buttering the insides of 4 ramekins and cut the crusts from 4 slices of bread. Gently press the bread slices into the ramekins.
Place a slice of ham inside the bread, creating a well for the egg.
Tuck a small amount of shredded cheese in the center of the ham, crack an egg into the center of each bread cup and sprinkle a little more cheese on top. Season with salt and pepper; if desired.
Place your ramekins on a baking sheet and place in the oven for your desired level of doneness, 12-15 minutes will be perfect. I actually recommend assembling the ramekins right on the baking sheet in case some of the egg oozes over. My ramekins are a little on the small side and this happens every time.
I love that this recipe is so versatile, feel free to swap out the cheese or meat for your own personal favourite flavours. A spicy jalapeno or salsa cheese would work really well here and a nice pea meal bacon would be great as well. If you are using regular bacon, I would suggest frying it part way through first.
For me, I love the way the subtle sweetness of the Dempster’s Honey Wheat bread goes with the ham and cheddar. Depending on the size of your ramekins you may also have room for some finely chopped onion or peppers.

This is a really great recipe for when you have overnight guests because you can make many egg cups at one time and each one can be personalized. You can serve your Breakfast Toast Cups in the ramekin or go ahead and pop them right out. A side of fresh fruit makes for a pretty presentation and goes well with the savoury cups.
Dempster’s Honey Wheat bread is only on shelves for a limited time; grab yours from February 16 until June 14, 2017.
