How your couch, mattress or carpet can earn you an easy $20 minimum

There may be more money hiding in your couch than a bit of loose pocket change.

Canadian families who bought sofas, mattresses, padded chairs and carpet underlay may be entitled to compensation for being overcharged thanks to  a recent out-of-court settlement involving  foam manufacturers who allegedly conspired to fix their prices.

So, the bad news is, several manufacturers of polyurethane foam products allegedly formed a cartel to fix prices, between 1999 and 2012, resulting in consumers paying more than they should have.

The good news is, if you purchased one or more of these eligible products containing flexible polyurethane foam that were made in Canada, you are entitled to a piece of the $38-million settlement!

How to claim your $20 min per household

You automatically are considered a “class member” and can make a claim if you lived in Canada between January 1, 1999, and January 10, 2012, and bought an eligible foam product or carpet underlay made in Canada during that time period.

To submit a claim, simply fill out the online form and submit the required documentation (you’ll need  to include a photo of the product label or receipt) no later than February 6th 2018.  Choose the Simplified Form if you are claiming $20 or the Long Form if you are claiming more than $20.

If you are not sure, use this online calculator to decide which form is best for you. We were surprised when we started seeing how all of our past purchases started adding up! Because we moved into our first apartment and our first home during the eligible time period, we had made a number of large furniture purchases and replaced almost all of the flooring in our house resulting in claim of over $150!

Family members who are living together must submit their purchases under a single claim, with the minimum payout for one item being $20.

 Which products qualify?

A claim can be made for the purchase of flexible polyurethane foam made in Canada and for the purchase of the following eligible foam products, if made in Canada:

  • Bed mattresses
  • Upholstered office chairs
  • Upholstered Armchairs
  • Two-seat sofas
  • Three-seat sofas and sectional sofas
  • Carpet underlay
  • Carpet pad
  • Carpet cushion

Remember, you only have until February 6th to file your claim, this is your money! Join fellow Canadians and send out a strong message that this type of behaviour has serious consequences and that consumer’s want healthy competition between manufacturers.

I think it’s disgusting that firms should have conspired to cheat customers like this. There’s the foam and bread but what don’t we know about????
