Healthy Black Bean Brownies that are naturally gluten free and low-fat. They are so fudgy and delicious the kids won’t even know they are packed with black beans and avocado!
After some indulgence over the Christmas holidays, my husband and I agreed we needed to get back on track with our healthy eating now that the new year was here. We’ve been doing pretty good but we could also do a lot better some days. I still have a pretty bad sweet tooth after all and the boys love, love, love their desserts!
Why deny yourself the things you love right? Brownies and chocolate are at the top of my list when it comes to baking so on one Saturday night when we were craving a sweet treat for dessert I decided to give avocado black bean brownies a try. I’ve heard about black bean brownies over the years and never quite got brave enough to try them, but when I mentioned the idea to my husband he was all for it.
Turns out, I had nothing to be afraid of! These healthy brownies may be loaded with the goodness of avocado and black beans but they are also chocolatey and fudgy just like a brownie should be. If we didn’t tell the kids, they would be none the wiser!
Avocado Black Bean Brownies Recipe
Black Bean Brownie Ingredients
1 – 15 oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained
1 egg
2 egg whites
1/2 of a large extra ripe avocado
1 teaspoon coconut oil
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup chocolate chips, plus 2 tablespoons for topping
How to Make Avocado Black Bean Brownies
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.
Blender Brownies!
These healthy brownies are so easy to make and can you believe they have no flour? Just place all of the ingredients besides chocolate chips into a blender, food processor or a large bowl and use a hand held blender which is what I used.
Process or puree until ingredients form a nice smooth batter. This batter will be thick to create nice fudgy brownies but if it’s just WAY too thick add a teaspoon or two of water. I didn’t find it necessary for ours. Next, add in the chocolate chips and fold into batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle with the remaining chocolate chips. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out somewhat clean and top of the brownies begin to crack.
Cool pan completely on wire rack then cut into 12 squares.
Healthy Brownies
Don’t be afraid of words like low-fat and gluten-free, these brownies are are still nice and moist and still have a nice rich chocolatey taste. Take a peek at the inside – a little crunchy on the inside and soft and gooey on the inside like a good brownie should be!
Avocado black bean brownies are perfect for tucking into school lunches for the kids or for after school snacks!
Our fudgy black bean brownies are good served straight up on their own, but our families favourite dessert to indulge with is a brownie sundae so we couldn’t resist serving these bad boys warm out of the oven with a scoop of frozen vanilla yogurt right on top. PURE HEAVEN!!!
You could also use homemade coconut cream which would be really good too!

I made these once before and honestly I didn’t really care for them, I didn’t like the taste or anything
was it this same recipe? I found them quite chocolatey and couldn’t taste the black beans or avocado at all
I’m afraid since they have avocado in them I’d not even try them, mind you I don’t eat brownies either.
