GoPro HERO3+ for Family Travel

You may have seen the ads for the GoPro and thought to yourself, “that looks incredibly cool, but I don’t do extreme sports like surfing, dirt biking or snowboarding… I’m a parent with young kids, I don’t need a camera like that” and you would be so very wrong. While the GoPro is certainly made for, and can handle, any adventurous sport you through at it, families can get just as much use out of the GoPro as the sports enthusiast!

Now that the boys are 5, 6 and 8, we are traveling more and more and the small size, lightweight, and durability of the GoPro was just what we were looking for. From tubing on Ontario lakes, to zipling adventures and riding the Hornblower Cruise in Niagara Falls, my boys had an exciting Summer and we were able to capture it all with the GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition. The GoPro allowed us to take footage where no other camera would allow due to the waterproof housing! It brought a whole new element of excitement to the traditional boring family vacation videos!

With the GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition your vacation videos can look like this…

Not so boring anymore right? With the help of the Free GoPro video editing software (GoPro Studio 2.0) and the professional GoPro templates, we were able to include scenes from our very wet Hornblower cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, Skylon Tower, Skywheel and the Fireworks over the falls all into one action packed video! There are a lot of features in the software, such as zoom, rotate and remove lense fish eye, that allow you to capture a large field of view in the camera and refine it in the software afterward.  The combination of a small go anywhere camera, a large wide angle lense, simple software and professional video templates allows the beginner to produce great videos without large equipment and several retakes.  Warning:  creating videos can be slightly addictive.

If the GoPro is said to handle skydiving, rough waves, handle bars than we figured it could handle the most destructive thing we knew – our kids! Normally, I don’t let the boys near my camera equipment, but the GoPro is built tough! I trusted the GoPro more than my kids here, and we let the boys film the world from a kids point of view on a number of occasions, including tackling the slip and slide!

The GoPro is probably different than any other camera you’ve used. While this unit is an incredible piece of technology, I actually felt like I had gone back in time, not being able to have use of a display screen. For someone who is obsessed with checking photos off the back of the camera, not being able to do that took some getting used to. If you’re like me the GoPro App will be your lifesaver so you can control your camera remotely.

The GoPro App allows you to use your smartphone or tablet as an ultra-convenient remote control for your GoPro. Quickly adjust camera settings, start/stop recording, switch modes, check your battery level and more. It’s great for gear-mounted shooting where the camera is out of reach. Plus, live preview lets you see what your GoPro sees so you can frame your shots with confidence. As you gain more experience with the camera, the field of view of the lens, and the software with its many correction features, I found you become more comfortable not having to see everything live while recording.

While the GoPro HERO 3+ is pretty impressive on it’s own, it really works to it’s full potential with the many, many accessories that are available to suit your needs. The Future Shop website has 4 pages of accessories including head and chest straps, tripods, handle bar and helmet mounts, and polar lenses. The options are limitless! As a parent, being able to record hands free is fantastic!
