Growing up my parents had country music playing constantly, they weren’t much into musicals or broadway! When I hit highschool I got my first taste of the theatre and I was hooked! Never wanting to be onstage, but perfectly happy to sit in the audience, I grabbed tickets to production after production and loved every single one! In my 20’s I even made my way to NYC and caught a couple of broadway plays! One time I met Paige Davis after the show when she had performed in Chicago! So naturally, I love to share this love with my own boys in an age appropriate way! We’ve taken the boys to see a number of live products from Max and Ruby, to the Doodlebops and even Toopy and Binoo, seeing those characters outside the tv screen is a magical experience!
Last night the boys and I sat down together to view Shrek The Musical, a broadway show which earned eight 2009 Tony Award® nominations including Best Musical, winning Best Costume Design of a Musical (Tim Hatley) and received a Grammy Award® nomination for Best Musical Show Album!
While I love watching broadway productions IN the theatre, I wasn’t sure how well this would hold my kid’s interest or mine for that matter, watching it on the tv screen. I mean, if it’s on tv anyway, shouldn’t donkey actually be a donkey? lol Luckily, I was wrong! It was pretty entertaining even playing on the tv screen. The boys watched, but moved about the room taking turns cuddling and playing on the floor, but the songs captivated them for sure! They also laughed hysterically when Shrek and Fiona had a little farting and burping match!
Speaking of Fiona, she was the highlight of the show for me! I adored her! She was quirky and goofy but lovely and sweet all at the same time! The actress playing the part of Fiona was Sutton Foster, who is knew to me, but I’m certainly a fan now!
