Thanksgiving has been one of my favourite holidays for years. There are so many reasons really, but mostly because it’s held in the prime of autumn with the bursting colours, warm days and cool nights. It has all meaning of Christmas without the stress, just time together with the family. A time to feel blessed. A time to bethankful for each other.

Our Thanksgiving weekend always entails a trip to the Fall Fair, turkey dinner and some time playing with the kids in the yard. This year will be extra special because we will have family visiting all the way from Australia to stay the weekend with us. When I started thinking about all the ways petroleum products touched our lives, I couldn’t help but realize just how much impact they have on our holidays and day to day routine.

From airplane fuel, to food packaging. From the clothes on my back and cosmetics on my face. From the building materials that went into our house to the pharmaceuticals that go into our bodies and even the plastic containers of our toothpaste and shampoo. When we sit down together at the dining room table this Thanksgiving, petroleum will have played a large part in getting us all there.

Did you know that Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world with 97% of those reserves in the Oil Sands? The Oil Sands are found in 3 deposits in Canada: The Athabasca, Peace River, and Cold Lake areas in Alberta and Saskatchewan and have the potential to create over 800,000 jobs in the next 25 years.

There are so many differing views on crude oil and petroleum, but when I think ahead to our special Thanksgiving dinner this year, surrounded by family both near and far, I know it would not have been possible without oil products. And for that, I’m Thankful.

  1. You know, I never thought about it that way. Petroleum products are important!

  2. Its amazing how much we rely on Oil!!! I don’t know how I’d survive without it!

  3. Wow, that’s awesome you have family from Australia visiting! 🙂 I can totally see how petroleum products would be required to get them here. (Can you imagine if they had to travel via wind or steam power? It’d take them until next Thanksgiving to get here and back again!) Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  4. I’m so thankful for Petro products! I couldn’t imagine life without it because we use it every day – multiple times a day.

  5. You certainly opened my eyes to the importance of petroleum products. Especially jet fuel…without that I wouldn’t be able to travel to see my son as often.
Hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving and enjoy the time with your Australian relatives. (PS….LOVE the froggy hat!!)
