Is it Spring yet? I know technically the calendar is saying it’s spring, but boy it just doesn’t feel like it yet does it? A couple of weeks ago I was reading last month’s Sweet Reads Box pick The Lonely Hearts Hotel on the beach down in the Dominican Republic and it was pure bliss. I need more of that, but it looks like we’ll have have to wait a wee bit longer for reading on the beach here in Canada.

Whether your a beach bum who likes to read or you prefer to cuddle up in a cozy blanket by the fireplace (maybe you’re both like me!), you’ll love the Canadian subscription box just for book lovers, Sweet Reads Box.

Check out my March Sweet Reads Box Unboxing video for a quick overview, or keep reading!

Each Sweet Reads Box comes with the following:

  • A novel chosen from a top bestseller list.
  • A decorative spoiler card explaining the choice of novel and how your items connect.
  • A sweet treat.
  • A cozy beverage.
  • A couple of items connected to the novel’s story.

The card this month gives us a good hint that the novel takes place in New York City, and once you dive into the book choice Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk by Kathleen Rooney, you’ll see that not only is New York the setting for the story, but it’s practically a main character itself!

She took 1930s New York by storm, working her way up writing copy for R.H. Macy’s to become the highest paid advertising woman in the country. It was a job that, she says, “in some ways saved my life, and in other ways ruined it.”

Now it’s the last night of 1984 and Lillian, 85 years old but just as sharp and savvy as ever, is on her way to a party. It’s chilly enough out for her mink coat and Manhattan is grittier now—her son keeps warning her about a subway vigilante on the prowl—but the quick-tongued poetess has never been one to scare easily. On a walk that takes her over 10 miles around the city, she meets bartenders, bodega clerks, security guards, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-be, while reviewing a life of excitement and adversity, passion and heartbreak, illuminating all the ways New York has changed—and has not.

A love letter to city life in all its guts and grandeur, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic; the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop.

Lillian figures she might as well take her time. For now, after all, the night is still young.

The sweet treat this month came from the Kawartha Lakes Fudge Company, with a creamy Cookies and Cream fudge.

The beverage is from Naked Teas Galore in Juicy Cranberry with Citrus Lime Notes flavour.

Also included this month is a custom Sweet Reads Box tote bag, a Good Measure Whisky Glass and a mojito inspired lip balm called “Me Time” from Walton Wood Farm that perfectly goes with the Sweet Reads Box tagline – Me Time Delivered.
