Got kids who love to fish? This Fishing Cake will be a big hit for a summer party!
Okay, the kids will for sure love it, because candy. But honestly, fishing fans big and small will get a kick out of this adorable fishing cake and it’s super easy to put together!
All my boys love to fish, so knew this year I had to do a fishing cake for one of them and it went to my youngest who was turning 9. I also made similar fishing cupcakes for his party with friends, but for the day of his birthday this was our cake for at home.
How to Make a Fishing Cake
You’ll Need
One 9×13 cake, any flavour
Buttercream icing
Blue food colouring
Black food colouring
Pretzel stick
Gummy fish
Green fruit roll up

Candy melts (optional)
Directions
Frost the full 9×13 cake with the white buttercream icing as a crumb coat. I usually slip the cake into the freezer for a bit at this point to firm up and make the second coat go on nice and smooth.
Spread the second coat of white buttercream onto the top portion of the cake that will be the sky.
Mix a small amount of blue food colouring into the white and spread onto the bottom half of the cake, this will be your water. This doesn’t have to be smooth, I like to leave this part a bit messy with swoosh lines so look like waves or moving water.
You can add the Happy Birthday message on with buttercream icing or candy letters if you choose. I like to do this first so I can see how much room I have to work with. The Alphabet Candy Mold, I bought from the Bulk Barn when I was out picking up supplies because it was on clearance and I thought it would be fun to give it a try so for this cake that is what I used.
I have terrible handwriting and I liked that I would be able to use the mold over and over again for other uses. It was also used on this Sports Cake a couple days later on his brothers birthday.
To use the mold, place candy melts in a small microwavable dish, one colour to each bowl, and microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir and microwave for another 20-30 seconds until you reach a smooth texture. Spoon the melted candy melts into the molds on the letters you will need. I alternated with Yellow, Purple, Orange and Blue. Place the mold in the fridge to harden. You’ll have to repeat the process for the letters you need double of.
I also made the letters of my sons name and added them to the water, around the fish after I took the photos. I don’t share their names online for privacy, but wanted to mention it as an option for you as well. Or it looks cute without as well.
Now that you have the placement of your letters you can add the pretzel stick for the fishing pole. Mix in the black food colouring (I like to use the gel kind, especially for black, or you can also just buy a small black tube to save you time and hassle if you prefer) to a small amount of buttercream icing. Pipe on the black icing to replicate the fishing line.
For the seaweed at the bottom I used a blue and green fruit roll up and just used the green parts. Use scissors to cut thin lines, or if you have herb scissors, those work really well. Just place them along the bottom of the cake, even on the sides. You can overlap some of the strands to give it some life and texture.
From here you can just fill in the rest of the water area with the gummy fish, making sure to include one on the end of your fishing line. If you are going to add in the recipient’s name, arrange those letters in with the fish as well.
You’ve got yourself an easy fishing cake! Perfect for birthdays and summer parties!
