Car and Truck Activities for Preschoolers

Car and truck activities geared for preschoolers PLUS some of best car and truck toys for kids!

When I was a teen I spent my summers babysitting for a family with 4 boys, the irony right? Turns out it was good training. They lived in a newly developed neighbourhood that was still growing and I would often take the boys for walks. Not only was it good exercise for all of us, but I learned quickly that it was a great way to entertain the boys. New neighbourhood meant construction and construction meant a plethora of big trucks and there was nothing the boys like more than watching the big trucks.

Fast forward years later and I’m a mom to little 3 boys and the cliche is true, boys love trucks. And cars, and basically anything with wheels. Bicycle? Yes! Motorcycle? Even better! Sports car? Now we’re talking! Dump Truck? Heck ya!

Tonka Power Movers

When it comes to entertaining little boys, vehicles are always a hit and Tonka is a time tested favourite. And now Tonka Power Movers have new Motion Drive Technology!

The rugged Dump Truck and Cement Mixer feature new Motion Drive Technology allowing for fun and intuitive play that brings the action to life! With Motion Drive Technology, push the vehicle forward to make the engine rev and activate the lights; push the vehicle backward to hear back-up sounds; work the dump bed or spin the cement barrel to hear hydraulic sounds and flash the lights.

Car and Truck Activities for Kids

While boys are quite content to make up their own play with their toys, there are still a few car and truck activities you can do to help little ones expand their play and keep everyone busy and happy on rainy and snowy days stuck inside or outside in the backyard during summer weather.

Car and Truck Activities for Kids

Car Wash – Set up a car wash station for your muddy trucks. Fill a small tub or kiddie pool with warm water and bubbles and let your kids give their cars and trucks a bath.

Tire Tracks – Pour some black paint onto a paper plate and have your child roll the wheels of a toy car or truck into the paint, then roll the truck all over a piece of construction paper to make tire tracks. I’m sure you’ll also see some skid marks.

Sensory Bin – Fill your sensory bin with sand, small rocks and big trucks. This is not for young children who put things in their mouth, but big boys will love using their dump trucks and loaders to lift and move the rocks around.

Monster Truck Bowling – Set up plastic ups in bowling pin fashion at the bottom of a small kiddie slide and let your child race his truck down the slide to see how many cups he can knock down.

Road Tape – Create tracks for your cars throughout the house or room with road tape.

Playmat– Playmats are another great way to create the scene for cars and trucks. My boys loved connecting mats together and creating large cities to cruise round.

Playdough Fun – Add small cars and trucks into your playdough activities, kids will love to see the tire tracks left through the playdough and can use their imagination to create constructions scenes and other scenarios.

Ramps – Use cardboard, wood or even pool noodles cut in half for small vehicles to create ramps for cars and trucks to run down.

I was in line at ToysRus the other day. A grandpa was standing behind me. He is hold a huge Tonka toy. He says “these were all we had to play with in my day” I smiled. He then started pressing buttons which made noise. He says ” but ours never did this!” I giggled. Note: he kept playing with it as we stood in line. It was awesome!!
