31 Hockey Books for Kids to Read This Winter

Hockey families will enjoy reading these hockey books for kids together!

Chances are if you have boys, they like hockey, especially up here in Canada. Even if they don’t play the game competitively themselves, hockey is fascinating to watch and so much fun to play out on the driveway.

This winter, snuggle up with your kids and read a few fun hockey books together.

Our family has a few favourites of our own! These six hockey books for kids below are ones I’ve read for years with my own boys. Many are based in Canada, highlight Canadian teams or share a moment in Canadian hockey history which is really neat to share.

one hockey night
ONE HOCKEY NIGHT (Canadian Site)

This is a story about Owen and Holly who have just moved from Saskatchewan and miss playing hockey on their frozen lake back home. Their mom and dad surprise them on their 1st Christmas Eve in Nova Scotia with a backyard ice rink! I love how the illustrations look like they are painted on canvas and all the recognizable Canadian NHL jerseys! Guess what they lined their rink with??? lobster crates!

the mighty tim horton

THE MIGHTY TIM HORTON (Canadian Site)

By Mike Leonetti
Illustrations by Greg Banning

Anyone want to guess the year Tim Horton helped win the Leafs the Stanley Cup? It was 1962!
Could there be a more famous Canadian name than Tim Horton? I think not!
In this story a boy named Trevor is having trouble staying out of the penalty box and is warned by the coach that if he keeps it up, he’ll be benched. Trevor expectantly meets the great Tim Horton one day, who gives him tips from one defenseman to another. I like that this book teaches kids that you can be a great hockey player without being rough on the ice and shares a fun part of Canadian hockey history.

In a hockey match unrivaled in prehistory, the Meat-Eaters take on the Veggiesaurs. Fans go wild in the stands as T. Rex and Triceratops face off, and the game is off to a rip-roaring start. An assist from Raptor gains the first goal for the Meat-Eaters—but the naughty Pterodactyl twins, playing wingers, earn their team a penalty. The Veggies are quick to take advantage and Diplo scores. A tie game! Join the fans and find out what happens. You’ll have a front row seat, so keep an eye on Raptor. Hockey gets him pretty riled up and that’s quite a set of teeth he’s baring . . . This is such a great book with some fun rhyming. We loved this one so much we bought Dino-Baseball too.

THE BIG GAME (Canadian Site)

By Gilles Tibo

It’s the championship game and Nicholas’ team is facing the best team in the league. With advice flying faster than pucks, can Nicholas keep his cool and come up with the perfect winning strategy?
This book reminds me how much pressure we put on our young hockey players, everyone is shouting advice, cheers, and game plays at the boys and they are so overwhelmed they can’t play well! Nicholas comes up with a plan to block all the noise out and it works! He lets his team in on the plan and they end up winning the game!

OVER AT THE RINK  (Canadian Site)

By Stella Partheniou Grass
Illustrations by Scot Ritchie

Join in the fun as the whole town cheers on the home team on a sunny winter day at the rink. Set to the catchy rhythm of the traditional counting rhyme Over in the Meadow, Over at the Rink is the perfect way to count all the reasons we love hockey.
My boys are very familiar with the rhyme, Over in the Meadow. We have a couple of books from different eras that feature that rhyme so it was fun to see the same pattern here with a new and fun hockey rhyme!

crosby's golden goal

CROSBY’S GOLDEN GOAL  (Canadian Site)

By Mike Leonetti
Illustrations by Gary McLaughlin

Hockey games and hockey practices. Power skating and summer hockey. Tyler loves hockey, but he feels like it’s taken over his life. He just wants the chance to hang out with his friends. So he decides to take a break, though he still follows the games and his favourite player, Sidney Crosby. Then Tyler gets the chance to be in the stands for one of the most memorable games — and goals — of a lifetime, and he realizes just how much he misses the game.
This story reminded me of why we didn’t sign up my boys for hockey. We want them to learn to skate but were aren’t interested in their lives being consumed with hockey and taking over the family calendar. For years we listened to neighbour boys complaining of this very thing so it’s a theme I think many will relate too. I love that Mike created this story around one of Canada’s proudest Olympic moments though, I don’t think any Canadian will forget that goal for years to come! A powerful moment for our nation! So glad to be able to share the moment with my boys through this story!
