Rainbow Jello Cups

Rainbow Jello Cups are a fun and simple treat for kids. They are perfect for birthday parties, St. Patrick’s Day or just a way to brighten someone’s day!

Hey there mama’s, how are you doing? No really, how are YOU doing? The world is a bit cray-cray right now isn’t it? I hope you are all holding up well, staying in your homes as much as possible and keeping sane. Looking for a fun little treat you can do with the kids? I thought you might be!

When our schools here in Ontario first shut down due to COVID-19, it was our scheduled March Break and I had purchased a few packages of Jello because I thought making rainbow jello cups would be a neat activity for St. Patricks Day. My oldest, who is 13, saw them in the pantry and asked about them. When he found out what they were for, he took it on as his own little project!

So if you have big kids, this is something they can totally do on their own. Show them how to do the first layer and then they can take it from there. It’s a simple recipe, the hardest part is having patience for the layers to set! If you have little kids, this is a fun activity to do together that involves learning about colours, rainbows, measuring, science ect. Great homeschool activity!

How To Make Rainbow Jello Cups

  • You’ll need boxes of Jell-O in the colours of the rainbow. We used 5 layers, red, yellow, green, blue and purple.
  • Follow the directions on the box of red Jell-O to start
  • Pour a small amount of the liquid into each cup
  • Refrigerate until it has set completely
  • Continue with the next color of the rainbow
  • Add a small amount on top of your first color
  • Refrigerate until it has set and then repeat each step again until you have used every color of the rainbow
  • Once all your layers are complete, add some whipped cream and sprinkles!

Doesn’t this little snack look pretty!!!

Because it takes so long for the jello to set, and you’ll want to make sure it’s completely set so the colours don’t bleed together, you will probably want to make it over a couple of days. My son would do one layer in the morning and another in the evening. And then we all had a great dessert during one of our many movie nights!

We used something similar to a small stemless wine glass and the recipe made 5 cups. You could easily use a smaller cup, like a regular plastic disposable drinking cup, and double the amount you get. We have 5 members of our family so this was perfect for us, though it was a lot of Jello and most of us did not eat it all in one setting. We popped it back in the fridge and finished the next day.

The boys really loved the treat and wanted to make it again. It looked really amazing in the sunlight and was a great way to brighten our spirits!

Go ahead and Pin to save for later!
