You would never guess now by our family full of little boys, that my husband and I had a bit of difficulty conceiving. For medical reasons, doctors asked me to wait longer than we had planned to start a family and it was devastating for me, I was ready. To ease the pain a little, we started our family anyway and adopted the most gorgeous chocolate lab puppy. Riley was our furbaby through and through, she came home with us at 6 weeks old and instantly filled our hearts with love.
When we got the okay to start our family, we ended up dealing with fertility issues and had our hearts broken with miscarriages and failed attempts. Our girl was there to comfort us through it all. Finally, our boys joined our family and Riley loved them like her own. Always, gentle and sweet, she was so good with our boys. The boys often pointed out ‘Riley’s doctor’ when we drove by the vet’s office and our visits became more frequent as she aged.
Last fall, Riley’s senior years were not being kind to her and with heavy hearts we knew that she didn’t have much longer with us. She was very uncomfortable and struggled both to eat and get around. We consulted with our trusted vet and together made a date to say good-bye to our sweet girl. I’ll never forget the kindness they displayed to us that day. They did such a wonderful job of both taking gentle care of our girl and consoling me through my sobs as well. It was a hard day, but they made our last visit as smooth as possible and didn’t let me leave without a big warm hug.
I have so much respect for the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association and I’m excited to team up with them to host a fun Twitter Chat centered around caring for your pet this summer.
