Scholastic Books Review

I’m sooo excited to work with Scholastic again, and to share with you a few more great titles from Scholastic Canada!
Books are a passion in our house, we love nothing better than a well stocked shelf full of amazing stories and adventures! It warms my heart to watch Big Brother look at books on his own and now that he is four he is ending sentences for us and coming up with the next word in rhyming books. So magical to see him learn and grow. Middle Man still likes to read his books upside down, but he is showing a greater interest every day and never misses out on bedtime stories.

Here are a few new favourites-

One Drowsy Dragon
Ethan Long
hardcover/ages 3-5/August 2010/$21.99
Well, I don’t know who loves this story more, me or the kids! It’s a toss up! I get to play the One Drowsy Dragon who tries to get the other 9 Drowsy Dragons to go to bed, because it’s always Mommy who’s tired and does that! Big Brother has a favourite Dragon and he looks for her on each page, but all the dragons are super cute and the bold colours and illustrations are fantastic!  ” Four fiesty dragons wrestle to the ground. One tired dragon asks “please keep it down?”

This is Silly!
Gary Taxali
hardcover/ages 3-5/August 2010/$19.99
This story is about Silly Sol who slips down a hole and enters a crazy silly world! The illustrations have a retro feel and look to me like old comic books. Introduces kids to all kinds of ‘silly’ words like kooky, buffoonery, and tomfoolery. The kids love the end of the book that provides a mirror for them to make silly faces into! The author Gary Taxali is a Canadian and lives in Toronto Ontario. Check out the characters and learn more at www.thisissillybook.com

Too Much Stuff!
Robert Munsch
paperback/ages 3-8/September 2010/$7.99
Well Canada’s most beloved children’s author does it again with a brand new book called Too Much Stuff, about a girl named Temina who is taking a trip and tries to bring alllll her stuff! We are big Robert Munsch fans at our house and own quite a few of his books. I love that this is another illustrated by Michael Martchenko! You can pick out his work a mile away and even my husband said he could tell as soon as he looked at the cover, that it must be Robert Munsch book. The pair just go together brilliantly!

To celebrate Robert Munsch’s 30th book with Scholastic Canada, fans are getting the opportunity to decide which story will be published in May 2011! How cool is that!
Three story ideas have been posted on www.scholastic.ca and readers can vote online from Sept 1-Oct 31, 2010. The story that receives the most votes will be turned into a book, and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

Each of the three stories is set in a different location in Canada: Rigolet, Labrador; Fort McMurray, Alberta; and Brussels, Ontario. Each story was inspired by children Munsch met while visiting those communities and he will return to visit the locale of the winning story when it is published in May.

I was provided with the above books free of charge for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was given and all opinions expressed are my own.
