My seven year old is a bit of a LEGO genius. He has wowed us with is his creative building talent since his first LEGO set arrived at our door a couple of years back. We couldn’t get over how quickly he mastered the set on his own and loved that he could follow the instructions without help to build each set, including a very complicated X-wing starfighter. Better than that though, he was soon creating his own sets and letting his imagination run wild! So what’s a boy to move on from once he’s crushed the LEGO world??
nanoblocks were introduced to Canadian toy shelves last fall. Even though they were a hit in Japan in 2008 and in America in 2010, this was our first look at the new mini sized building blocks. nanoblocks are a micro-sized building block system with its smallest piece being a mere 4mm x 4mm x 5mm. Just to give you an idea of what that looks like next to a familiar LEGO piece, take a look.
SUPER tiny right? Both challenging and fun for all the construction enthusiasts in the family (including Dad!), because Nanoblocks lets you build in greater detail than ever before. Besides the petite size of the blocks, nanoblock’s three-dimensional construction also offers an unprecedented level of detail, realistically replicating world famous landmarks, exotic animals and other popular items and when complete, they fit right into the palm of your hand!
We were sent a micro sized Big Ben replica which will be really fun for Big Brother and Dad to build together. Dad has seen Big Ben with his very own eyes and it makes a fun little conversation starter to keep on his work desk! Other nanoblock sets available in Canada include: Eiffel Tower, Neuschwanstein Castle, Taj Mahal, Space Shuttle, U.S.S. Enterprise, Moai Statues, Giraffe, Tree Frog, Koala, Panda, Dog, Horse, Lion, Elephant, Duck and Pig. Each one contains anywhere from 150 to more than 550 pieces.
The age recommendation starts at 8 for this Big Ben set and includes over 460 pieces. The instructions are set up very different than you will find with other building sets for kids and are a little more complex. Once the blocks are connected, you will need a pair of needle nose pliers to get them apart, so for these reasons, Dad is going to help our son put this first set together. It will be a nice project for the two of them to work on together.
Nanoblocks are available now at Toys “R” Us and other select Canadian specialty toy stores, including Scholar’s Choice. Prices range from $10 to $50 depending on the set purchased.
