DK for Mom’s & Babies

Having children often changes our perspective on a lot of things. It’s time when we often reflect and re-evaluate all aspects of our life. From the food we eat, to the soap we use, to what we choose to buy and the books that we read. It’s also a time that’s ideal for making changes.

greenbaby
Green Baby by Susannah Marriott is a great book PACKED with tips for better, healthier, living. It’s a quick and easy read, and it’s a book that you’ll keep going back to reference and for ideas. Whether you’re just starting out, or if you’ve already started to implement some green living techniques, there are examples/ideas in there that cover things you may not have even thought of. Some of the things talked about are: eating green and eating local, growing your own food, breastfeeding and holistic bottle feeding, green cleaners, green health and bodycare (my personal favourite in the book), and they even talk about playing green.
I think what I like most about this book is that there are an abundance of point form tips that make making changes to your lifestyle an easy step by step process. Start with changing one thing, and slowly begin to incorporate more.

Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook by Lizzie Vann
In the words of my kids, “why didn’t we have this book before?!” It starts off talking about the importance of organic foods, what best for your baby, harmful additives, and benefits of eating organic food. Then it moves into the recipes. I tried most of the recipes – much to my childrens delight – and almost all of them were a hit. I love that the recipies are categorized by age and that they are easy to make. Easy enough that I had the kids help me with the preperation on most recipes. The biggest hit was the recipe for breadsticks. The kids loved helping to roll out the dough, and they ate the entire batch right out of the oven. We’ve made it a couple times a week now. I like  that each recipe has a couple of variations to it, or that it suggests substitutions. It makes things easier, and I feel like it helped me to build confidence in putting my own spin on things. This would be an excellent addition to any kitchen – it makes cooking more of an adventure instead of a chore!

thingsthatgoPOPUP
Little Hide and Seek, Things That Go! by Charlie Gardner is currently a favourite in our house. Having young boys, books with  tractors, diggers and planes are a big hit in our house. This book stands out from others, because of the bright and colourful pages, and the kids LOVE that every page has a hide and seek challenge. The book also helps to teach colours, shapes and counting. The boys’ favourite feature of this book is the oversized pop-up at the end, which we play I spy with. We read this book a few time a day – by far a favourite!

chugchug

Chug Chug Tractor by Dawn Sirett is just like the book says, the best tractor book ever. The book is perfect for toddlers aged 2 and up, as it has large pages with many flaps to discover and sounds to explore. I say 2 and up simply because of the flaps – in my experience the younger ones tend to be more interested in ripping off the flaps than in whats under them! The book takes place on a farm and includes cheery rhyming text  to describe animals, the tractor and the farm itself. Some of the flaps will surprise you with sounds when you open them, the kids love those the most. A great book for learning all about animals and their sounds, the farm and tractor and its parts.

words
Big Busy Book – Words by Dawn Sirett is a great book for toddlers. The book features different activities like I spy and match-up that are great for teaching new words/sounds that we see/hear in everyday life. It also includes learning about different parts of the body, while having fun exploring how our bodies move by making faces, touching your toes and jumping jacks – this page is a favourite for my boys. Anytime a book involves the kids by getting them to be active or silly, it’s going to be great!
